Doorbell in the Sky Words & Music by Timothy Walsh Never been here? Ever alone? Never seem to compromise? Always living in these idle days with you always on my mind. Chorus 1: I don’t see it—these final-come places and you don’t say why. I don’t see it—these final-come places or this doorbell in the sky…. I don’t see it—never at home. Never seen you close your eyes. Always sleeping through these idle days with you dreaming through my mind. Chorus 2: Never idle? Never alone? Can I sing you till I die? Always searching for these final days, for some doorbell in the sky…. Bridge: I can tell it—you can see in my home. There’s a pellet of something that grieves me and I can smell it and I don’t want to be here…. Up in heaven—never alone— Lounge chairs all the time. Looking down upon these idle days like partners in a crime. Chorus 2: “Never idle? Never alone? etc. After dinner…afternoon… Hereafter on your mind, galavanting through these idle days— Afterlife you’ll never find. Chorus 1: I don’t see it—these final-come places etc.

Saturday Blues Words & music by Timothy Walsh I cannot show you around…my life pictures of you always around… never a moment…. when you’re out of mind. I do not say you can’t be…my wife, just that you don’t disagree… we are both drifters… not the marrying kind. Chorus: Saturday blues…. that’s all you say is the matter. Saturday blues… but what are we gonna do? You say that you cannot go… back now… to girlhood dreams of a future… …of a husband…and a little white house. I wish you’d tell me if you knew how… to do it all over again… …when you’re life’s just…a tattered old blouse. Chorus: Saturday blues….etc. I do not pray anymore…for my life. Tell me you won’t disappear… not for another… you won’t twist that knife. Why can’t I be with you here tonight? You know much better than me… I’ll be gone from here…at very first light. Chorus: Saturday blues….etc. Show me you’re feeling that you’d…settle down. Maybe I’d settle down with you… far from this city… in some perfect town. I laugh and say, hey you know, you’re right! What if we hit the road now… …down this asphalt…to the edge of night?

Winter Trees 04:54
Winter Trees Words & music by Timothy Walsh Walking out by the willow tree, walking out just you and me… I know….I know… that there is nothing we can do as the sky turns midnight blue…again…. Again. Chorus: We’re looking out at these winter trees and I can feel the roots beneath our feet— the underworld runs so deep. Looking out at these winter trees and I can feel my soul spill through the sky. Now I know how trees can fly…so high. Walking out by the old oak tree, walking out and you told me your life…your life is nothing but a candle flame flickering in the wind until the end…the end. Chorus: We’re looking out at these winter trees and, etc. Bridge: Looking out here and you don’t say it. Looking out here and I could pray it. Looking out here at these winter trees. Seeing clearer in the twilight. Seeing deeper cause there’s no light. Seeing that we’re just two winter trees. Walking out by the green yew tree, walking out so you can see the way…the way it thrives in winter, never dies, roots run deep into the skies below…below. (Instrumental Chorus) Sitting under the sweetgum tree, I played guitar so I could be within…within the sound of the woodgrain when it comes alive and wakes you and you sing…you sing. Chorus: We’re looking out at these winter trees and…etc.

Sylvie's Song Words & music by Timothy Walsh When Sylvie calls to me, I go out by the old yew tree. She serenades the oaks, soothes the maples' autumn cloaks. She sings a woodland song--she sings it all night long when Sylvie calls to me right now. When I am on my own, close to tears cause I can't hear her, she comes into my dreams, greets me with a smile, our hearts together. She sings a moonlight song--she sings it all night long when Sylvie comes to me right now. Bridge: I don't say I could tell the world what I don't know. (I don't suppose you've seen the spirits far below?) Beyond the world of sight our senses are so slight that we don't know. When Sylvie's far from me, I look out at the cedar tree. I watch it in the wind, branches flying like her wings. It sings a scented song--sings it all night long when Sylvie's far from me right now. Do you see Sylvie now? See her in your hearts together? She whispers in your ear, makes you long for something better. She sings a twilight song--she sings it all night long when Sylvie calls to you right now.

Whistling While the World Ends ***Words & Music by Timothy Walsh Here we are, altogether on this earth wondering how we could be whistling while the world ends. Moon is high above the mountains, the stars are shining down upon the debris. The waters rise and flood the cities. The rich are fleeing to their walled retreats. Whistling while the world ends. Rain is flooding down the hillsides, landslides where our forests used to be. Wars are raging across the planet. Refugees are stopped at borders by guns. Whistling while the world ends. Famine rages killing millions while the politicians drink their tea. Now we sit around a fire, wondering how we ever got here to see whistling while the world ends. The planet shakes off this human scourge like a little dog afflicted with fleas. Here we are, altogether, on this earth wondering how we could be whistling while the world ends. Moon is high above the mountains, the stars are shining down upon the debris.

Stacy Lets Go ***Words and Music by Timothy Walsh As she walks, her legs ring the bell of her skirt-- she comes closer to me. When she smiles, her eyes light the world so I finally wake up and see. Is this lust or is this desire? She's such a puzzle to me. Is this love or is this devotion? I just want to know if you'll drop everything and... CHORUS: Go! High into the mountains to someplace with no return. Go! Far across the ocean where we can weather the storm. Stacy let's go. All around, cottonwood fluff fills the sky as it falls to the ground. It's as if the clouds were shedding to weave you a glorious gown. See the trees reach for the stars-- how they dance in the wind in the night. Feel the breeze play on our skin--but I just want to know if you'll drop everything and.... CHORUS: Go! High into the mountains to...etc. Everywhere, spiders are spinning their webs by the firefly light. I go gladly into your arms-- tangled heartstrings wrap us so tight. Hear the waves crash on the shore-- how they beat like a heart in the night. Chase the moon through this moth wing June, cause I just want to know if you'll drop everything and.... CHORUS: Go! High into the mountains to....etc. As she walks, her legs ring the bell of her skirt-- she comes closer to me. When she smiles, her eyes light the world so I finally wake up and see.

Sligo Fair 04:02
Sligo Fair Words & Music by Timothy Walsh When I see you on Monday- wonder will you go to Sligo Fair? Then comes Tuesday, and I'm looking for you…everywhere. I can't be with you and I don't know why- it's not like you're seeing some other guy. You are the orange, and I am the green. My family won't brook it, there's nothing between us at all. When I walk out on Wednesday, thinking more about…Sligo Fair. Will you be there, or will my heart be breaking…once again? I can't be happy if you are so sad- though your grandfather served in the Black and the Tans. The sins of our fathers are visited on us- they darken our days so we can't feel nothing at all. Out walking on Thursday, down along the streams by…Culdalee. I meet you so sadly sitting in the shade of a hawthorn tree. You came upon me like a vision in white- a ghost from the ruins bewitching my sight. I feel so adrift in your hazel-green eyes- shall we go walk the fields while twilight embraces us all? You come calling on Friday, and I say will you walk to…Knocknashee? We'll climb through the evening, and by sunset we'll see what…we will see. They say that this hill fort is riddled with graves- that the faerie folk live here all of their days. I see by this moonlight your dazzling eyes- the Ox Mountain blessing descends like stardust on all. When we walk out on Saturday, holding hands as we stroll through…Sligo Fair. Don't know who'll be there. Don't know if we'll notice…or we'll care.

about

"Whistling While the World Ends" is a compilation of early Penelope's Thrill recordings from 2016-2019--all of them recorded at home, direct to a Zoom R8 recorder. Many tracks were recorded "live"--main vocals and guitars--with bass and additional guitars added later. All songs were written by Timothy Walsh, who'd recently jumped back into songwriting and recording after a long hiatus. Two of the songs--"Saturday Blues" and "Sligo Fair"--were written especially as duets to sing with Amanda Sanderson of Newcastle, England, after the two met on SoundCloud and decided to work together.
Now remastered for great sound!!

about

Penelope's Thrill Madison, Wisconsin

Penelope's Thrill is a lucky accident. Lured out of musical retirement by son Andrew, Timothy Walsh dusted off his guitars, including his favorite vintage Guilds and Gretsches, and picked up where he left off 25 years ago playing in garage bands in New Jersey and Boston.
Tim founded Penelope's Thrill as the vehicle for his songs, often pulling in other musicians for particular tracks.
